Kabras RFC Clinch Historic Three-Peat, Reign Supreme in Kenya Cup Final!
In a dominant display, Kabras RFC cemented their place in Kenya Cup history, defeating KCB Rugby 29-5 to secure their third consecutive title. This emphatic victory, achieved at the Kakamega Showground on April 6th, 2024, marks a remarkable feat for the Sugarmen, etching their name among the Kenya Cup elite.
Kabras RFC Waste No Time
Coach Carlos Katywa’s men wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Just three minutes into the encounter, a beautiful switch of play by Brian Tanga set up Walter Okoth for a try behind the posts. Ntabeni Dukisa’s successful conversion propelled Kabras to an early 7-0 lead, setting the tone for the match.
Relentless Kabras Extend Lead
Building on their momentum, Kabras continued to pile on the pressure. A penalty followed by a well-executed try from Kevin Wekesa, courtesy of a clever chip by Dukisa, further extended their lead to 15-0 within ten minutes. KCB’s troubles deepened as Griffin Musila received a yellow card, reducing them to 14 men.
Kabras Capitalize on Numerical Advantage
Seizing the golden opportunity presented by Musila’s sin bin, Kabras capitalized on their numerical advantage. Dukisa, the star of the show, collected a well-weighted pass to score their third try of the half. This time, his conversion attempt found its mark, extending Kabras’ lead to a commanding 22-0 by the half-hour mark.
Second Half Sees Yellow Cards Galore
However, the second half witnessed a shift in disciplinary aspects. Shortly after the restart, Dukisa was sin-binned, handing KCB a lifeline. Vincent Onyala capitalized on this opportunity, evading the Kabras defense to score a try. Although Darwin Mukidza’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful, KCB managed to get on the scoreboard, trailing 22-5 at halftime.
Kabras Clinch Victory
The second half also saw KCB’s Elvis Olukusi receive a yellow card for an infringement. Despite the numerical advantage, Kabras failed to fully exploit this due to handling errors within KCB’s 22-meter zone.
Ironically, it was immediately after Olukusi’s return to the field that Kabras secured their fourth and final try. Brian Tanga’s quick restart caught the KCB defense napping, allowing him to score with ease. Dukisa’s successful conversion sealed the deal, bringing the final score to 29-5.
A Cemented Legacy
With this historic victory, Kabras RFC has joined the prestigious company of Impala, Kenya Harlequin, Nondies, and KCB Rugby, all of whom have achieved a three-peat since 1970. They have also extended their unbeaten run under coach Carlos Katywa to an impressive 26 matches, with a total of 28 consecutive victories.
Kabras RFC has undoubtedly cemented their position as a powerhouse in Kenyan rugby. Their relentless pursuit of excellence and ability to perform under pressure make them a force to be reckoned with. As they set their sights on future challenges, one thing remains certain: Kenyan rugby has witnessed the rise of a true champion.
