KCB Clinch Anticlimactic Eric Shirley Shield Title
The KCB Rugby Club II finds themselves champions of the Eric Shirley Shield under a cloud of controversy. Their scheduled final match against Kabras Sugar to be played on April 6th will not materialize. This is after Kabras conceded a walkover . For the second year running, empty stands at will echo the absence of the usual pre-match fervor expected during an ESS final.
Reports suggest Kabras had requested a change in the final’s date, proposing to host the match over the Easter Weekend. This request, however, was not approved. The Eric Shirley Shield, a development competition for Kenya Cup second teams, traditionally holds its final separately.
The walkover cast a strange light on KCB’s victory. While officially champions, the players were robbed of the chance to showcase their skills on the pitch and claim victory through a hard-fought battle.
This back-to-back walkover has sparked debate about the Eric Shirley Shield’s significance. With no prize money and an unclear pathway on how to restructure the ailing league, some question the tournament’s purpose. However, the trophy still represents a milestone for KCB.
Despite the unconventional win, KCB is determined to use this as motivation. They’ll return to the field hungrier than ever, ready to prove themselves not just champions by default, but champions by right. The Eric Shirley Shield, with its imperfections, might not be the ultimate goal, but it’s a stepping stone. KCB is determined to use it to propel themselves towards bigger victories, ones earned through sweat, grit, and in the roar of a cheering crowd.
