Zetech Oaks Eye Championship Return: Coach Matekwa Discusses Strategy and Significance
Zetech Oaks rugby club stands on the precipice of a significant achievement. A victory against MKU Titans in the upcoming Nationwide Central Region finals on April 6th would secure their return to the Championship League after a one-year hiatus. Head Coach Ramsfield Matekwa recently spoke to RagaPost, outlining the importance of this match and the team’s strategic approach.
The Weight of Victory
Coach Matekwa recognizes the significance of a potential win. “A victory for Zetech Oaks would be immensely gratifying for the team,” he affirms, “but it would also hold immense weight. It would be a testament to the team’s relentless effort and dedication throughout the season. Furthermore, it would generate positive publicity for Zetech University, a steadfast supporter of our program. Ultimately, this win would serve as a stepping stone for our well-deserved return to the Championship League.”
Intensified Training Regimen
The high stakes have prompted Coach Matekwa to implement a more rigorous training program. “We’ve significantly intensified our training regime,” he discloses. “The number of training days has increased from three to four per week, with a particular focus on building endurance.” This amplified focus acknowledges the demanding nature of the finals and the need for peak physical conditioning.
A Pivotal Moment in the Season
Coach Matekwa identifies a specific game as a turning point for the Oaks’ success: “The encounter against Embu Dragons in Chuka proved to be a true test. Fatigue from travel and adverse weather conditions, coupled with a hostile home crowd, presented a significant challenge. However, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing a crucial victory. This game served as a powerful reminder of the team’s unwavering spirit.”
Respecting a Formidable Opponent
While acknowledging the MKU Titans’ experience in the finals, Coach Matekwa expresses confidence in his team’s capabilities. “The Titans are a formidable opponent,” he concedes, “but we’ve already faced them successfully during the regular season. Additionally, we can draw upon similar experiences from the regional semis last year. I have unwavering faith in the team’s commitment to produce an entertaining and ultimately victorious performance.”
Zetech University: A Pillar of Support
The coach emphasizes the invaluable role Zetech University has played in the team’s journey. “The unwavering support from the university has been paramount to the success of our rugby program,” he acknowledges. “Zetech University has ensured we have the necessary resources to run a successful season, particularly during this challenging year that has seen many teams struggle. Their commitment extends to providing scholarships for talented students and fostering a positive environment that has significantly boosted team morale.”
Building a Sustainable Future
Potential promotion is viewed as a catalyst for further development. “Success this season has the potential to be the seed that cultivates new programs,” says Matekwa. “We envision establishing a ladies’ side and an age-grade development program to ensure a robust pipeline of talent for the future.”
Strategic Advantages of Promotion
Promotion to the Championship League offers distinct strategic advantages. “With our new home ground at the Mangu main campus,” he explains, “we’ll be in a prime position to execute on our long-term plans. This includes maintaining two core teams that can participate in both KUSA and Union games, fostering a continuous exchange of experience between the teams. Ultimately, our goal is to reach the Kenya Cup well-prepared.”
Acknowledging Individual Contributions
The varsity side Coach is quick to credit the unwavering dedication of his players for the team’s success. “I am incredibly impressed by the dedication, discipline, and consistency displayed by the boys throughout the season,” he commends. “Everyone, from the bench to the starting lineup, has exceeded expectations. Captain Jared and his assistant Johnstone Wafula have been instrumental in providing leadership and inspiration. Players like Brian Ondesa, and Anderson Oduor, have delivered moments of brilliance, with Evans Kiluva playing a crucial role in solidifying team unity.”
A Welcoming and Inclusive Environment
Coach Mategwa extends a warm invitation to potential recruits: “We welcome everyone to Zetech RFC and the Oaks family. We embody the university’s values of nurturing sporting talent while cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment both on and off the field.”
Celebrating Victory, Oaks Style
With a touch of amusement, Coach Matekwa acknowledges the importance of celebrating a potential victory. “Our faith is central to all our endeavors,” he says. “Therefore, after a win, all glory and thanks will be directed upwards. We also have a significant fan base, and we intend to celebrate together in a unique Oaks bonding tradition.”
Anticipation Builds
With the game fast approaching, excitement is palpable. Coach Matekwa and the Zetech Oaks are primed to deliver an unforgettable performance. Will their unwavering determination and strategic approach be enough to secure victory and a return to the Championship League? All eyes will be on Zetech University Main Campus on April 6th as the Oaks face off against the MKU Titans in a match that promises to be a thrilling display of Kenyan rugby.
